Mid Century Modern Addition
Tsawwassen, BCThis project involved the renovation and a substantial addition to a mid-century modern home. Because of its large size, the addition required careful integration to achieve an aesthetic balance of the whole. On the interior, it was the vehicle to create an open system of circulation around a central space of gathering; creating a new dynamic between all of the main living spaces. A visual unity comes from the retention of the post and beam roof/ceiling structure overhead. Smaller spaces are created as objects within the space.
The new master suite continues the use of vaulted ceilings. A high band of windows maintains privacy while flooding the interior with natural daylight. The new kitchen includes the client’s desire for a ping-pong table sized island. Under the encompassing ceiling, a number of smaller elements, like little buildings inside, facilitate various uses and a more intimate experience. At the smallest scale, modern detailing and a refined palette of materials and finishes, defines the new unified character of the home. This includes custom cabinetry and built-ins, and a careful overall lighting plan which works to balance the bright white elements with the darker warmth of the wood.
