Southlands House
City of VancouverThis is a large house on a hillside overlooking the Southlands area of Vancouver. The project included a large garden with decking and a pond, all located in the front of the property. As a large house with many rooms of various sizes, it was key to smartly organize locations and carefully design the circulation halls and stairs to tie the interior experience together. The primary public spaces all face south to the garden and hillside views. The main circulation (stairs and halls) was knit into the back side, between house and garage, where it occupies a light-filled multi-story space that helps balance the attractiveness of the interior as a whole. The principle ‘public’ spaces are large, with the living room and entry being two stories high. The scale of these large spaces was refined using structural columns, divided window walls, and by designing some adjacent rooms such that they penetrate into the larger volumes in interesting ways. The experience of the whole, both in use and while moving through it, is orchestrated over a range of scales and visual complexity and interest.
