Rockland Renovation
Rockland neighbourhood, Victoria BCThis project involved a substantial interior rebuild, including the removal of some floor area to make a large central volume which provides the family with a group of related spaces that comprise the active heart of the home and family life. The interior volume was increased by opening up into the upper floor. Accessed by a new feature stair, a catwalk was installed in the new volume. It functions as an open hall between the second-floor bedrooms at either end. Two story window walls bring ample daylight and provide views for the main spaces, as well as in both directions along the catwalk.
An in-law suite was designed as a wing of the main house. Together with the garage, these are used to create an entry court and garden which provide a calm private outdoor space previously lacking. Otherwise, the design accomplishes its goals within the existing building envelope. The exterior received changes which contributed to the definition of the building’s massing including the introduction of additional windows, new cladding materials, and the removal of several roof elements to maximize the entry of light into the interior spaces.
